COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to help the students gain a better understanding of music theory, correct vocal performance technique and performance skills. One of the main course objectives is for the students to learn to enjoy many types of music from classical to pop to rock as well as other types of music. Lastly I will encourage the students to take part in performing solos and small ensembles for the solo ensemble competitions.
The student will also have an opportunity to earn extra credit by going to a live performance by the Toledo Opera and writing a review of the experience.
OBJECTIVES
The student will learn about the vocal techniques required for correct singing. The student will learn about blend and good vowel placement.
The student will learn theory of music from key signatures, to time signatures to rhythms and basic transposition skills.
The student will become comfortable with ear training and solfage.
The student will have an opportunity to participate more fully in the Christmas and spring performances, as well as The Art Spectacular and various other performance opportunities.
RULES AND REQUIREMENTS
Respect for yourself and others
No gum, food, or beverages (except for water) at any time during the class.
Homework is assigned sporadically so each assignment must be turned in on the due date. No homework will be accepted after the due date unless the student is absent on the due date.
If absent on a test day the test must be taken on the next day the student attends school.
Positive reinforcement will be given in the form of verbal praise, coupons, notes, and phone calls about the student’s progress.
Warnings will be given when a student has broken a rule. If a student has excessive warnings the parent or guardian will be called.
The student must be on time to class by 7:05 the door will be locked
The student must attend the dress rehearsals or they will not be allowed to participate in the performances.
EVALUATION /GRADING
The student will be evaluated through tests, assignments, homework, and attitude and class participation. Tests are worth 70 points, homework is worth 20 points and participation is worth 10 points a week.
Because there are ample opportunities for “extra credit”, I will NOT round the grade up. For example: an 89.9999% will be recorded as an 89%.
If the student participates in class and turns in ALL assignments on time, the student will receive a passing grade.
REQUIRED ATTENDANCE
The student is required to be in class on time daily. If the student has excessive absences the student’s grade will be highly affected by the absences.
