Program for College Credit for Superior High School Students

THE PROGRAM:
On-site course work is provided at Lima Central Catholic through the efforts of an Ohio Northern University faculty member, an ONU approved LCC instructor, students, the LCC President and an ONU administrator.
INSTRUCTORS IN THE PROGRAM WILL:
- Be assigned the rank of lecturer at ONU
- Be approved by LCC President and ONU Department Chair, Dean, Vice President for Academic Affairs
- At minimum possess a master's degree in the appropriate field
- Submit a copy of classroom assignments, course exams, etc. to a supervising ONU faculty member
- Provide and follow a syllabus approved by the ONU faculty supervisor
- Arrange for the ONU faculty supervisor to give a class or observe at least once during a term
- Submit grade reports to the ONU program administrator at the end of the course
LCC ADMINISTRATORS WILL:
- Collect registration forms and ONU charges for college credit and submit these by approved deadlines.
ONU FACULTY MEMBERS WILL:
- Approve course syllabi
- Serve as course liaisons and academic resources
- Discuss course specifics with the LCC lecturer prior to commencement of the course
- Visit the course at least once a term to give a class or observe a class
- Review grading standards, procedures.
ONU ADMINISTRATORS WILL:
- Ensure recording of grades at ONU
STUDENT PARTICIPANTS WILL:
- Rank in the top 20% of their class
- Score in at least the 50th percentile in a standardized test (PSAT, ACT, SAT or similar exam)
- Have a minimum of a 3.0 out of a 4.0 grade point average
- Have approval of the high school administrator prior to registration
- Earn a at least a minimum grade of a ''C'' to receive college credit at ONU
- Return application and fees to LCC prior to the start of the course
- Request a copy of a transcript in writing from the ONU Registrar's Office, as needed
FEES:
The fee for participating students is $30 per quarter hour of credit. All fees must be paid to LCC prior to the start of the course. There is a one-time application fee of $30 to be paid at the time of enrollment. This provides for student admission to ONU and sets up the mechanism for issuance of transcripts of ONU work.
OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY:
Founded in 1871, ONU is a private, United Methodist related University with five colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Pharmacy and Law. Located in Ada, Ohio and offering over 50 majors with approximately 3200 students, ONU has a faculty to student ratio of 1:13 for undergraduate students and 1:11 for graduate students.
Allied Health Curriculum
In the fall of 2001, Lima Central Catholic instituted a new on-campus college program in cooperation with Rhodes State College and St. Rita's Medical Center. The program is of interest to many different types of students within our system but focuses largely on students who are interested in allied health careers. This includes nursing, dental hygiene, emergency medical services technology, medical assisting technology, medical imaging technology, nutrition and food management, occupational therapy assistance technology, physical therapy assistance technology and respiratory care technology.
Essentially, this program offers a block of college classes to students in both their junior and senior year. Upon graduation from LCC, the student will have completed 25-30 hours of college level course work qualifying them to directly enter any of the above fields at Rhodes State College. Proof of acceptable work done in this program may result in a full scholarship to finish any of the above programs at Rhodes State College. St. Rita's Medical Center funds this scholarship program and provides employment for the student upon completion of the program.
The student completes a regular program at LCC along with taking the additional course work through Rhodes State College.
The Junior curriculum includes:
- PSY 101- Psychology- 5 credit hours
- SOC 101- Sociology- 5 credit hours
- COM 225- American Short Story- 3 credit hours
The Senior curriculum includes:
- GAH 181- Medical Terminology- 3 credit hours
- BIO 111- Anatomy and Physiology 1- 5 credit hours
- BIO 112- Anatomy and Physiology 2- 5 credit hours
- COM 111- Composition- 3 credit hours
There are also some optional technical electives available to the students in this program that would aid in most of their programs. These include:
- BHS 131- CPR-Cardiac Life Support
- BHS 106-Phlebotomy
Rhodes State College holds articulation agreements with many two and four year institutions in the country. Transfer of these credits to other institutions is common. Any incoming Juniors or Seniors interested in this program, please contact the Guidance Office. The tuition for this program could be covered under the Post Secondary Enrollment Option through the state of Ohio if the student is able to qualify. Students not able to qualify initially may be granted admission to the Junior program, if parents are willing to assume financial responsibility.
Academic Assist
The Mission Statement of Lima Central Catholic states that 'we will work, with God's grace, with the Church and with our families to form our students into thinkers, doers, and saints so that they become tomorrow's servant leaders. In keeping with our mission statement, all students enrolled at Lima Central Catholic are expected to demonstrate a sincere desire to learn. This sincere desire to learn is marked by a cooperative attitude and good study habits.
A support program, Academic Assist, has been established to encourage, enable and empower students who are not meeting academic success or would like to become more successful. Academic Assist meets twice a week from 2:45-3:30 P.M. beginning at the end of October. All students are welcome but a student with two or more F's at the end of any quarter is required to attend Academic Assist. These students and their parents are notified with the quarterly report card. An unexcused absence results in an immediate phone call to the parent.
A student whose grades have improved to a C or above at the mid-quarter progress report may phase out of Academic Assist. Any student who continues, through subsequent quarters, to fail to demonstrate a sincere desire to improve grades will be placed on Academic Probation. This placement occurs following a parent conference.
A student who continues without an improved attitude and effort may be asked to withdraw from Lima Central Catholic High School.
PACC Program for Advanced College Credit (College on Campus)
Lima Central Catholic High School also maintains an articulation agreement with Lourdes College in Toledo for additional college credit in English and Composition. Currently, the Junior Honors English class and the senior AP Composition/Literature class are available for credit. Students are awarded 3 semester hours of credit at Lourdes for each class.
Student participants must:
- Be of Junior or Senior status
- Have at least a B average and a score in at least the 50th percentile on a nationally recognized test
- Receive a grade of C or better to receive credit for the class
Credit Recognition of PACC Courses:
Because students enrolled in PACC classes are considered Lourdes College students, they will retain official transcripts there. Many colleges and universities accept PACC credit, but some do not.
If a student chooses to attend college elsewhere, these credits are considered transfer credits. Because each college sets its own transfer policy, it is the responsibility of the student to verify whether or not their intended college will accept these transfer credits.
To request an official Lourdes transcript, students must request the transcript in writing and include:
- Full Name
- Social Security Number
- Date of Birth
- Exact Address of the Person or Place the Transcript is to be Sent
- Date
- Personal Signature
